The engine I'd spent three weeks building had destroyed itself in less than a minute.

I sat in the garage — now 3 AM, because failures always seem to happen in the small hours — staring at the engine on the stand, wondering how I was going to afford replacement irons and an e-shaft on a parts-store counter salary. Marcus brought his own torque wrench, which he described as "calibrated by God himself," and a cooler full of Modelo.
For the next eight weekends, my parents' garage became a workshop. Kevin taught me how to properly set end play. Marcus walked me through every clearance measurement, explaining not just what the spec was but why it mattered — what happens when it's too tight, what happens when it's too loose, what the failure mode looks like. Dream Star Drivers Club started in that garage. Not when the engine finally ran, but somewhere in between — during the second rebuild, when four people who barely knew each other a year earlier were standing around an engine stand, passing tools, telling stories, and building something together.
The name came later. The brand came later. But the club — the real one, the one that exists in parking lots and garages and group chats and late-night text threads — was born right there, in the mess and the oil stains and the fluorescent light buzz.
Why We're Still Here
I still have that FC. It's on its third engine now, and the paint is somehow worse than when I bought it. Kevin and Marcus are still the first people I text when something breaks. The club has grown beyond that garage — there are Dream Star drivers in a dozen states now, and the group chat has more people than I can keep track of — but the spirit hasn't changed.
We're still the people who show up. We're still the people who answer the phone at 3 AM. We're still the people who know that the best things in life are usually the ones that almost didn't happen, saved by friends who wouldn't let you quit.
